Coldest Average This Autumn

Based on average daily temperature Saturday turned out to be our coldest day of autumn. It wasn’t that we had a particularly cold night as the temperature fell to -0.2°C (31.6°F), it was more to do with the daytime high only reaching 5.7°C (42.3°F) that resulted in an average of 2.9°C or 37.2°F.

It’s possible that it might be turning even colder as we progress through the rest of the week so it’s probably time for our agapanthus to be moved into the greenhouse for a little bit of protection.
The greenhouse won’t give it much protection from the cold but it will keep it out of any rain and it’s often a combination of the two that some plants don’t survive.

  1. I was surprised when I built my (small) greenhouse how little temperature advantage it offered at the lower end of the scale. The main winter benefit is shelter from the wind and rain, as you rightly say.

  2. When I replaced my old weather station I kept the old thermometer in the greenhouse for a while. I kept a comparison of greenhouse and outdoor temperature. As far as I could make out there wasn’t any difference between greenhouse and outside temperature during cold spells. I’ve occasionally used some straw as extra protection.

  3. My (indoor) thermometer has three outdoor sensors: A outdoors proper (on the arch facing north) B in the greenhouse and C in the shed (which has a window). The shed stays warmest but doesn't get as warm as the greenhouse, the greenhouse is very nearly as bad as outdoors for cold (but the highs are by far the highest of all three). The nighttime differences are very marginal, but just recently those margins have been making the difference between frosted and not frosted. The dahlias are going in the shed.
